The Elephant Seals at Ano Nuevo State Reserve are 2 ton behemoths that are at home in the Pacific Ocean. They come ashore in the winter to have their pups and to mate. In the spring or summer they return ashore to shed their skin. Although they look awkward on land, they can actually move faster than we can through the sand dunes. For more information about Ano Nuevo or the elephant seals, please jump to the Ano Nuevo State Reserve Web Site.
Red-Legged Frogs are fist-sized amphibians that were made famous by Mark Twain in his "Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". They are quiet and hard to find. Their coloration varies with some red always found on the inside of their back legs. Occasionally a frog is found that is almost completely brick red. To learn more about these secretive creatures, please go to: More Red-Legged Frog Information.

One of the little birds that can be seen running across the beach and sand dunes in a shrinking number of locations on the Pacific Coast is the Western Snowy Plover. These birds nest in any depression in the dunes, laying three eggs. When the eggs hatch, the baby Plovers are up and running within hours. The father of the brood cares for them on the beach, keeping them safe from predators for about a month until the babies can fly. More information about the Western Snowy Plover can be found at: More Snowy Plover Information.
